Selected Memories at ArtLab 21
A visual journey through time, randomness and transience
For 20 years, Claus Poulsen has explored the process of chemical degradation of slides, a technique he has developed and honed with early inspiration in the Czech photography tradition.
The method involves loss of control and chance as key elements. At different temperatures, chemical liquids and immersion from five seconds to one year, the emulsion and colour layers of the film layer change: if elements are missing in a photo, things appear that you would not otherwise have seen; where colours and elements have been etched away, wear, scratches and imprints from neighbouring images in the chemical soup stand out clearly. The result is photos that are no longer concrete, but transformed into painterly expressions that reinterpret the intrinsic history of photography.
Claus Poulsen is known as an experimental musician and visual artist for three decades. Over the years, many finished pictures have been published as covers for CD, cassette, vinyl for own and published albums and for a number of independent labels. "A World in Dissolution" from 2024 was Poulsen's debut with large-format printing and a solo exhibition that sold almost all the works in one week. With the exhibition "Selected Memories", the work continues - in larger formats on canvas, glass and Hahnemühle paper.
The photo series is exhibited at ArtLab 21, Møllegade 21, 2200 KBH N
Vernissage 28. June at 16-19
The exhibition is open until 6 April. July, 2-6 pm on weekdays and 11-16 on weekends.
